For the 2024 Summer Art Deco Festival, I curated the show ‘Before the Bikini’ on behalf of a group of private collectors who wanted the public to see authentic era beachwear.
The colourful collection of swimwear and beach pyjamas from 1900-1940 were playfully displayed in the company of authentic beach accessories and furniture. Creative Arts Napier hosted this exhibition with wonderful pieces from Art Deco enthusiasts Dion and Kaye Coleman, Inger Sheil and Marie Drew.
Their passion for all things Art Deco made this possible.
The opening night was fantastic with almost every guest dressed in original or handmade beachwear. Inger, who is assistant curator at the Australian National Maritime Museum, gave an entertaining talk and judged our best dressed couples.
After the event anyone willing came down to the Tom Parker Fountain for a photoshoot.
